Language Boss for English cram schools (buxiban)

Language Boss gives an English cram school one system for homework written from its own textbooks, speaking practice with pronunciation scores, placement tests for new students, attendance, and progress reports that staff send to parents on LINE, in Traditional Chinese by default. It was built in Taipei with Choc Education, and students can use the app with its menus in Traditional Chinese.

What a cram school needs, and what Language Boss does

NeedHow Language Boss handles it
Homework that matches the class textbookTeachers choose pages from your coursebook and the system writes exercises from them. A teacher reviews every exercise before students see it. How it works.
Students who rarely speak in classOpen answers are spoken. Pronunciation is scored sound by sound, and the app tracks each student’s recurring mistakes.
Parents who want to see progressStaff send a progress report from the student’s page: on LINE to a parent linked to the student, or by email.
Placing new students in the right classAn adaptive placement test, and a separate test of how many English words a student knows.
Attendance and the timetableSessions, attendance and class rosters in the staff portal. For classes taught on Microsoft Teams, meetings are created and attendance is read from who joined. Microsoft Teams integration.
Practice between classesFlashcards on a spaced-repetition schedule, practice picked for each student, and word games.
The staff portal’s My Classes page, with a New Material button and a prompt asking the teacher to connect their LINE account.
The staff portal: a teacher’s classes, the New Material button that starts exercise generation, and a prompt to connect LINE. Test account.

Parents on LINE

In Taiwan, parents usually pay for lessons they never sit in, and most of them read school messages on LINE. Language Boss can send progress reports to parents there, so they do not need another app or website.

  • A teacher or admin opens the student’s page, reads the report and sends it: on LINE to a parent linked to the student, or by email to an address they type in.
  • The report covers the student’s week: time spent in the app, exercises completed, average score, pronunciation, learning streak and new words. If the student did not practise, it says so instead of showing empty numbers.
  • It also includes any pronunciation mistake the system found that has been practised and is now fixed in the student’s speech in class, shown before and after.
  • On LINE the report is in Traditional Chinese by default. Simplified Chinese, English and Japanese are also available.
  • Students and staff can also connect LINE to sign in and to get notices such as schedule changes, newly scheduled classes and class-time polls.

The first part of a progress report as the system writes it on LINE, with made-up values. This is the English version; parents get Traditional Chinese unless another language is set.

Placement tests for new students

The placement test is adaptive: it picks each next question from what the student has answered so far and stops when it has a precise enough reading of their level. It mixes short tasks, including spoken answers, rather than one long test. The student sees no scores or verdicts; school staff read the results and choose the class.

Check these before you choose

  • The staff portal, used by teachers and admins, is in English. The student app is in English or Traditional Chinese. There is no Simplified Chinese student app.
  • Open answers are spoken, not typed. Language Boss does not mark written essays.
  • Textbooks are added with our team during setup rather than uploaded by teachers.
  • Microsoft Teams features apply to online classes. For classes in a classroom, teachers mark attendance themselves.
  • Students need a phone or computer with a browser and an internet connection.

Pilot results

Results from the Language Boss pilot:

  • 27% faster vocabulary acquisition
  • 3.1 times more speaking practice per student
  • 89% engagement
  • 65% less grading time
  • 92% parent satisfaction with progress visibility
  • 38% better retention

We can explain in the demo how the pilot was run and how each figure was measured.

Who uses it

Language Boss was built with Choc Education, an English school in Taipei that currently teaches small online classes of two to four students.

Common questions

Is the interface in Chinese?

The student app can be used in English or Traditional Chinese. Progress reports sent to parents on LINE are in Traditional Chinese by default, with Simplified Chinese, English and Japanese available. The staff portal for teachers and admins is in English.

Do parents need to install an app?

No. Progress reports reach parents as LINE messages, or by email. There is no parent app or website.

Can we keep the textbooks we already use?

Yes. Your books are added during setup, and exercises are written from the pages your teachers choose.

Does it work for classes taught in a classroom?

Yes. Homework, speaking practice and parent reports work the same way. The Microsoft Teams features (meeting links, attendance from who joined, class recordings) apply only to classes taught online on Teams; see Microsoft Teams integration.

How much does it cost?

Plans are quoted per school, based on student numbers and how many campuses you run. We go through price in the demo.
